Stay Cool, Stay Safe: Essential Tips for Summer Walking Fitness

Summer is coming, and before you step out for your daily walk, here are a few important tips to keep you cool, safe, and stylin' while you're at it:

    Hydrate Like It's Your Job

In the scorching summer heat, hydration is not just a suggestion, it's a necessity. Keep your favorite water bottle filled and by your side at all times, like a trusty sidekick. Remember to sip, sip, and repeat, even if you don't feel thirsty. Your body will thank you later!

A few favorites from the HQ team:

    • I have a small insulated Hydroflask water bottle with a handle that I pack with ice and liquid IV for extra cold hydration. (Megan, Director of Product)
    • I love the Lululemon Water Bottle Crossbody with Front Pocket for carrying my water bottle and phone. (Jamie, Director of Community)

      Time Your Trek

Rise and shine, early birds! The coolest part of the day is calling your name, so lace up those sneakers and hit the pavement before the sun turns up the heat. Can't swing a morning stroll? No sweat—opt for a sunset strut instead and bask in the glory of the golden hour.

Our HQ Teams favorite times to walk?

      • Early morning! Gotta beat the Georgia humidity, and about the only time to do that is before the sun comes up! (Megan, Director of Product)
      • Evenings after dinner when it's starting to get a bit cooler. (Jamie, Director of Community)
      • The morning - before the rest of the world wakes up. It's warm, but not too hot. It's quiet and my favorite way to start the day. (Michelle, Crew Support Squad)

      Dress to Impress (the Sun)

Say goodbye to dark colors and heavy fabrics and hello to lightweight, breathable threads in the shades of summer. Think light colors that reflect the sun and moisture-wicking fabrics to keep you cool, and remember to rock that wide-brimmed hat and your coolest shades.

What does our HQ Team love to wear?

Coolibar or Columbia Longsleeve loose-fitting shirts or wraps. And a large brim hat with protection for your face and neck. (Megan, Director of Product)

      Sunscreen Squad

Sunscreen is your skin's BFF, so lather up before you step out. Aim for SPF 30 (or higher) and slather it on like it's nobody's business. And remember those oft-neglected spots like your ears, neck, and back of your hands.

What's the sunscreen of choice for our HQ Team?

      • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF 60 for my everyday Casper the ghost skin (Megan, Director of Product)
      • Supergoop (Re)setting Mineral Powder. Super easy to apply and reapply to your face during the day. (Jamie, Director of Community)
      • Any mineral sunscreen is my favorite. I tend to use Blue Lizard since that's what I have for the kids but any mineral sunscreen will do (Michelle, Crew Support Squad)
      • MD SolarScience Mineral Tinted Crème SPF 30 – I finally found a mineral sunscreen I’m willing to slather on every day. (Joyce, CEO)

      Protect Those Peepers

Quality sunglasses aren't just a fashion statement—they're essential for shielding your precious peepers from harmful UV rays. Look for 100% UV protection shades and rock them with pride.

What will catch the HQ Team sporting?

      • Zenni Optical Polarized UV for us prescription girlies! (Megan, Director of Product)
      • Goodr - They have super cute designs and come out with new ones all the time, which makes it nice that they are so affordable! (Jamie, Director of Community)
      • Roka – they are not cheap, but they last a long time (I’m on year four) and they are the lightest, most comfortable sunglasses I’ve every found. (Joyce, CEO)

       Buddy System

When possible, walk with a friend or family member, especially on longer or more remote routes. Not only is it more fun to have company, but it also provides an extra layer of safety in case of emergencies..

       Listen to Your Bod

Your body knows best, so listen up! If you start feeling dizzy, nauseous, or just plain worn out, it's time to hit pause and find some shade. Trust us; there's no shame in taking a break and cooling off when needed.

        Happy summer walking!
